The near-perfect sinusoidal waveform has less than 2% total harmonic distortion and ±0.1% frequency stability. A microcontroller creates the sine-wave reference and controls the other functions of the inverter. High frequency pulse-width modulation with MOSFET and IGBT power semiconductors are employed to achieve 90% efficiency and 4.8VA per cubic-inch power density.
The INV5000-230 is fully isolated from the battery input. Input circuit breakers turn the inverter on and protect the battery from input faults. Output breakers connect the inverter to the load bus and quickly disconnect it in the event of an internal fault.

The
inverter also has a synchronization feature for connection to a line AC bus. A
high surge capability makes it useful for starting into inductive loads like
motors, but quick-trip output breakers prevent power from flowing back into a
faulted inverter.
Front
panel LEDs indicate inverter status, and Form C relay alarm contacts are
available on the back. The unit is self-cooled by internal fans and comes with
a clear plastic rear safety cover. Two or more INV5000-230 units can also be paralleled for higher power or
operated in an N+1 redundant mode.
The
INV5000-230 is ideally suited for use
in telecom installations, electric utility substations, fuel cells and solar
panel arrays. The 5kVA inverter is priced at $3,970 each in quantities.
